How to Stay Healthy While Working from Home

More and more companies are supporting their employees in working from home, whether due to current stay-at-home requirements or for encouraging flexibility in work schedules. Many businesses are beginning to understand that supporting the freedom to work from home can help to empower teams to learn how to manage their own schedules, work more independently and productively, build trust, and encourage a stronger work-life balance.

Times are certainly changing when it comes to how we used to conduct work, and how we do it now. Often a simple internet connection or shared network is enough to be able to work from just about anywhere. Although some offices still have the old-school mindset of designated office buildings and commutes, many companies are seeing the number of benefits that shifting to this new way to work can offer.

As with any kind of change, it’s important to take certain steps to ensure that you are set up for success in working from home. These tips will help you to make a smooth transition while balancing a healthy personal life at home.

How to Work From Home Successfully

Maintaining Work/Life Balance and Stay Healthy While Working From Home

- Set yourself up for success.
Working from home is very different from working at an office. There are a number of distractions at home (such as spouses, pets, children, chores etc.), so set yourself up right by:
Creating a space that is only for work
Even if you don’t have a designated room that can be used as a home office, it’s important to find a space that is dedicated only to work. When you work from the couch or the kitchen table, it can cause work tasks (and personal life) to bleed into other areas. Even just a small table in a common area will do, as long as it’s only designated for work tasks. If appropriate, ask your company for a stipend to get a small desk, a second monitor, or some ergonomic supplies to make your set-up a little more comfortable.
Getting “ready” for work
Sure it can be nice to work in your pajamas all day, however staying in your sweats can impact motivation and productivity. Make it a point to take a shower, get dressed, and get ready for your day each morning. It will get you in the mental state that you’re preparing for a work day, not a hang-out day.
Putting it away at the end of the day
When the work day is over, be sure to distance yourself mentally and physically from work. This is usually built-in when people leave the office (literally leaving work), but at home be sure to “put away” your office and your work. Turn off your laptop and put it out of sight in a drawer. Put papers and files away and out of sight. This way you can leave the office mentally, even if you aren’t leaving it physically.

- Set a schedule.

Arrange a schedule identifying when you’re planning to be at your desk and working and when you are done for the day, and be sure to communicate it to your boss. Creating a shared calendar that you can update with appointments, errands, or meetings will support good communication and clear expectations on availability. This also means blocking off time to take breaks throughout the day, just as you would at the office. Working from home can often blur the line between work life and personal life, but setting up clear boundaries in the beginning will go a long way in both mental health and work productivity.

- Support your coworkers.

If you have a team of people that you manage, arrange for weekly check-in meetings to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are set. When possible, set up monthly post-work happy hours or lunches where employees can meet up in person and connect. You can even put together a gift box or care package for employees or coworkers to make them feel truly special. Since hydration supports overall health and productivity, be sure to throw in a few boxes of True Citrus! With employees not meeting in an office setting it is still important to foster connection between each other, and this will help encourage teamwork and community.

True Citrus will soon be offering Thinking of You Product Bundles to send to coworkers, bosses, friends, and family to stay healthy, hydrated, and motivated while staying at home!

With more companies allowing employees to work from home, taking these steps will set yourself up for success. Be sure to create clear boundaries, communicate needs clearly with regular check-ins, take breaks, and put away your work at the end of the day. You may find that the flexibility of working from home is an incredible way to find an entirely new kind of work-life balance.
